Worth fixing, or time to swap?

Warning signs

Signals you shouldn't ignore.

Your engine usually gives you signals before it gives up completely. If any of these sound familiar, don't wait — the longer it runs, the more expensive it tends to get.

  • Knocking or ticking sounds — especially under load or at startup
  • Check engine light that won't go away — even after being cleared
  • Loss of power or rough running — particularly at highway speeds
  • Excessive oil consumption — burning through oil faster than normal
  • Blue or white smoke from the exhaust — often signals internal issues
  • Overheating — can cause serious damage quickly if not addressed
FAQ

Straight answers.

Q · 01

How can I check a used car for engine problems before buying?

Start cold — listen for knocks, ticks, or rough idle on first start. Check for blue or white smoke from the exhaust, oil under the cap that looks milky, coolant that looks oily, or a check engine light (active or pending codes). Look at the dipstick for sludge. Better yet: bring it to us for a pre-purchase inspection — a couple hundred dollars now can save you a few thousand later.

Q · 02

What are the symptoms of a bad rear differential?

Whining or howling that changes with speed, clunking when shifting from drive to reverse, a rumble or grinding that gets louder on turns, vibration under the vehicle, or gear oil leaking from the diff cover. Rear diff problems get expensive fast — get it diagnosed early.

Q · 03

How long does an engine replacement take?

It depends on the vehicle and parts availability, but most replacements take 2–5 days. We'll give you a realistic timeline upfront.

Q · 04

Is it worth replacing the engine vs. buying a new car?

Depends on the vehicle. If the rest of the car is in good shape and the replacement is significantly less than a new vehicle payment, replacement often makes more sense. We'll give you our honest take.

Q · 05

Do you work on diesel engines?

Yes. Diesel engine repair and replacement is a regular part of what we do, including for fleet vehicles.

Q · 06

Do you install remanufactured or rebuilt engines?

Yes. We'll walk you through the options — new, remanufactured, or rebuilt — and help you decide what fits your vehicle and budget.

Q · 07

Can you tell me if the engine is worth saving first?

That's exactly what the diagnostic is for. You'll have a full picture before you commit to anything.
